Swimming To Lose Weight

Swimmer_2771-web.jpgSwimming is a total body workout and another great way to shed those extra pounds. Swimming is so relaxing it’s hard to believe all the benefits this type of exercise has. Swimming is a low-impact way to lose weight. It really gets your heart pumping without putting pressure on your knees and other joints that are susceptible to wear and tear when you’re working out often. Did you know that you can burn 500-600 calories an hour swimming? Now of course that depends on how vigorously you’re swimming but once you get into a routine and build up some stamina, those are great numbers to see.

Throwing swimming into your workout routine is a great way to mix things up. Going to the gym everyday can be monotonous. Why not spend a day away from the weights and in the pool? Swimming is beneficial no matter what level you’re at. Start slow and build up your confidence, stamina and endurance. You’ll be using so many muscles in the pool that you’ll really feel like you’ve had a full body workout. Not only will you be strengthening your muscles but you’ll also be improving your flexibility.

If you’re just starting out, here’s what you’ll need.

  • Goggles
  • Bathing Suit/Trunks
  • Towel
  • Water Bottle

Don’t forget to warm up before you start your swim. Swimming is just like any other exercise and you should stretch before and after every swim. When you begin swimming, you most likely won’t be able to swim at a steady pace for more than 10 or 15 minutes. Don’t get discourage by this. It’s strenuous and you’re using so many muscles. It’s only natural to feel absolutely exhausted. But don’t worry because if you keep swimming on a regular basis, you’ll build up the stamina and endurance to keep going for 30 minutes and soon after an hour.

When you get in the pool try to do a variety of strokes. Alternate between the breast stroke, backstroke and freestyle. Swimming is so much fun, it really doesn’t feel like exercise. You’ll probably get a better workout swimming for 30-45 minutes than you would at the gym, rotating between machines. It really is a full body workout that gets your heart pumping and helps you build muscle.
